Specification for Australian Hard Wood Sleepers.
1.
The sleepers to be sawn 9' x 9" x 5".
2.
The sleepers shall be perfectly sound and straight, out of winding, cut square and generally true to dimensions, free from heartwood, depreciating shakes, large or dead knots, or any imperfections likely to affect the strength, utility or life of the sleeper.
3.
Provided a sleeper is otherwise a good one and is not, as regards width and depth, below the general dimensions given above "wane edges" will be permitted either on one or both edges; the amount of wane however, is not to exceed one inch in the aggregate measured round the corner or corners.

(Explanation:- Sleepers of the following sectional measurements will be taken:-
8½" width, if free from all sap and of the full 5" depth, or 4¾" in depth, if free from all sap and of the full 9" width,
or if containing wane either on one or both edges to the aggregate amount of one inch measured round the corner or corners, provided that the sleeper in other respects is a good sound one and not under 9" x 5").
They are to be of the very best quality obtainable and are subject to special approval.
5.
Sleepers to be inspected by Officers of the Public Works Department and when passed branded on one end with the departmental brand adopted for the particular timber certifying it to be true to name.
6.
Each end of each sleeper shall have a distinguishing mark of paint to facilitate sorting and grouping when stacking on delivery.
